The city is known for the chain of volcanoes, the chaîne des puys, which surround it. Conditions around the city are just right for growing fruit, and for much of the 20th century the countryside was covered in citrus groves. The city was originally two towns, clairmont and montferrand, which were joined by louis xiii. Its influence extends throughout the valley of the allier and the neighbouring plateaus.
